Track & Field is a multi level sport for everyone looking for fun, competition and fitness. There are running, jumping and throwing events that will challenge any athlete no matter what the age group or talent. Every novice or expert track and field athlete need goals. What better way to have goals then to travel down island, to the mainland, or the interior with the Campbell River Comets Track and Field Club to compete on a clean, professional looking rubber track. Some athletes just travel on the island, but others go onto test their talents at the Provincial and National level. No matter what your goal, fitness and fun will follow. The Campbell River Comets Track and Field team will do this for you. Also, track and field has many scholarship possibilities for high school kids in a large arena of Universities through-out Canada and the United States. The quality of course depends on your work ethic, commitment to practice, and in some ways, accomplishments. All in all, track and field is about fun, fitness, participation and competition. |
Come join the Campbell River Comets this season.
Welcome returning and new athletes to the 2011 Track Season. I am sure it will be another memorable season.
Thus far we have had two athletes receive full ride scholarships in the states while others are running for Universities in Victoria. All of course are enjoying the training and traveling to meets with their teammates that push, encourage them in life, school, training and competition.
I would like to thank Will Pakosz from Healthyway Natural Foods Market for sponsoring one of our Alumni Athletes, Stephanie Trenholm whom has high goals to take her racing to the next level this season in cross country and the outdoor and indoor track season (2012) where she trains with U-Vic from Victoria. The supplements she received will help keep her cost down immensely; in addition to helping her train harder and longer.

At press time Ayla Akehurst won bronze in the Triple Jump and came 5th in the 4x100 meter race. I have no photos at this time.

Campbell River Comets Track and Field Club athletes (9-13 years old) had a great meet at the 2011 BC Junior Development Track and Field Championships in Kamloops this past weekend.
"The Kamloops Hillside Stadium facility is a first-rate track where Dylan Armstrong and a few other Olympians do their training," said Comets head coach Dale Trenholm.
"I was very pleased by the effort, fun, and positive attitudes everyone had. I am sure every (Comets) athlete learned something about a meet at the Provincial level and even learned something about themselves."
The Comets sent nine aspiring athletes including Julia and Madison Ashcroft, Kristin Gage, Olivia Knowles, Cassidy Hinsberger, Hayley Hunter, Seever Rondquist, Brendan Hoff, and Ryan Nast.
"It was Olivia, Kristin, Ryan and Julia's first ever Provincial. They did fantastic as did the other athletes," added Trenholm. "The parent support organizing the relays, the help from (fellow Comets) coach Dave Ashcroft, and team atmosphere and each athlete supporting each other was fantastic.
"The weekend was full of heartache for some, personal best and some hardware, which is what sport is. As a track and field athlete we have to fight through the heartache, work on the personal best, and if you are close, go for a medal.
"We as parent and coaches need to remember this is just a sport first. However, sports are beautiful to me because they build character by bringing the best or worse out of you, friendships, team work, which helps you later in life. All we can do is learn from every experience to improve next time. There is no sense to keep focusing on the negative for obvious reasons."
In the hardware section, Hoff and Rondquist stole the show with three gold and a silver medal performance each. Also coming home with gold were Hunter and Nast.
Hoff won his three gold in the 2000 meter race with a smoking time of 6: 35.19, the 1200m in 3: 40.05, medley relay and a silver in the 800m.
Rondquist's gold came in javelin, shotput and medley relay, while his silver was in discus. Rondquist's javelin throw of 41.09m is now the top four JD all-time in BC.
His goal was 40 meters and I am very pleased he achieved this goal," explained Trenholm.
Hunter also won gold in the javelin with a throw of 33.47m, which earned her a first in the all-time top 10 throws in BC.
"With more practice from Hayley, she has potential to get even better," said Trenholm.
Nast received his gold in the medley relay with a strong 200m run.
"With track and field, some may not realize that developing the skeletal, muscular and circulatory system and mental part takes years and a lot of patience," Trenholm said. "Some are strong in some areas while weak in other areas. If we focus just on winning at this level, the fun will go away and pressure will be too great for some and there will not be the proper development. There is a balance.
"Anyone that knows my sport background know I am a very competitive person where winning was all wanted and could think about, but now as a coach realize coaching young athletes long-term development from teaching them how to train, compete, win and lose is more important - especially in track and field. There is no winning without losing and vice versa. In track and field, each athlete has their own limits and it is the job as a coach to know each one's limit and push each individual limits just enough to keep the fun in while at the same time develop them as an athlete and person.
"All in all, I was very pleased with everyone's effort, result and attitude.
"We will be starting our cross country program in the September, which I am looking forward to."
There will be more later, but to set the tone here is a Comet Blooper...the Bong is the Javelin hitting Seever's head. He had a big goose egg and headache from it. Good thing he could laugh about it.

There was Chyanne Trenholm who competed in the 200 and 300 hurdles. She made it to the final in the 200 and won silver in the 300 hurdles with a personal best time to beat. I was impressed with Chyanne’s speed endurance due to the fact she raced a 200, 300 hurdle and another 200; all with-in 3 hours. I expect great things for her next year when she moves over to the 800 and 1500 as her main events next year.
Ayla Akehurst shined at the meet taking gold in the Triple Jump with a personal best jump of 11:75 and a Silver in the Long Jump. She did a great job. I am sure with some consistent speed training; Ayla can really improve with her jumps next year. She will most likely be going to the Nationals with her TJ jump, which is Ottawa in August.
Megan Nuttal had a great weekend racing the 2000, 1200 and 800 and jumping in TJ. She placed 4th in the 1200 by taking off an amazing 10 seconds off her personal best time. Megan also got a PB in the 2000 and 800 so a great weekend for her.
Josie Simpson also had a great weekend with personal best in the 2000 steeple chase, 3000 and 1500 meter races. She will most likely specialize in the 2000 steeple next year.
Also, my other daughter Stephanie Trenholm who runs with University of Victoria (Vikes) had a great weekend. Steph was once a CR Comet, but now is an alumni with our club by helping out when she can. She has had her battles this year early in the year with her confidence, but with my help with the mind game, which is so important at her level or any level for that matter. She had a well deserved major jump in her performance this weekend with a Silver in the 1500 and major PB by over 2 seconds in the 800 with a 3rd place time of 2:10.01.
Stephanie, aside from this year had a rough 2 years prior by not competing one year and being hurt the year before that. I will go and say from what I see with her training, times and her attitude, which is thee most important aspect at the level she is at, will give the best runners in Canada a run for their money next year in the 800 and 1500. I know she will give it her best shot. She races at the Western Canada Summer Games at Kamloops in August where I anticipate more personal best and placements.
I tell my athletes that train with me; you only get as good as you train by being consistent with training on and off the track. To do this you have to desire it and want to put in the time and effort. There are no short cuts. There is much more of course by working hard and smart, imagination, staying positive, being patient, setting large and small goals, and work as a team player by supporting the other athletes is really important. Being a team player is really important if they chose to go to run for a University or Team BC or Canada. Having a negative and complaining attitude on a team at any level only affects the fun and dynamics of the team.
All an all, I am really pleased with the results and the Personal Best everyone achieved this year.
Was a great day to end the regular season. Water fights, fun games and to top it off, a cake fight. Thank you everyone for coming out and helping to make this first ever fun day with the Comets a success.
