What is Track and Field?

Track & Field is a multi level sport for everyone looking for fun, competition and fitness.  There are running, jumping and throwing events that will challenge any athlete no matter what the age group or talent. Every novice or expert track and field athlete needs goals so what better way to have goals then to travel down island, to the mainland, or the interior with the Campbell River Comets Track and Field Club to compete on a clean, professional looking rubber track.

Some athletes just travel on the island, but others go onto test their talents at the Provincial and National level. No matter what your goal, fitness and fun will follow. The Campbell River Comets Track and Field team will do this for you.

Also, track and field has many scholarship possibilities for high school kids in a large arena of Universities through-out Canada and the United States.  The quality of course depends on your talent, work effort, commitment, and accomplishments.

All in all, track and field is about fun, fitness, participation and competition.

Come join the Campbell River Comets this season.

Provincial Jamboree in Abbotsford (July 10, 11, 12)

Gregory Perry, Maureen McCulligh, Sabrina Clermont, Emily Charlesworth, Ayla Akehurst and Chyanne Trenholm will be competing at this meet, which is for ages 15 and up category.

A week later, one of the coaches in Courtenay and I will be competing at the Nationals in Kamloops. Two weeks later the Provincials for the JD's is in Surrey. We will have some athletes there too. I have not received all who are going.

Courtenay Meet

Courtenay Meet was a huge success. There were many personal best, including a team best as far as having 30 athletes participate at this meet. The rain on Saturday was a bit wet, but Sunday was excellent. They did run out of ribbons, which was a first for me, but all in all, the track meet and season for the Comets were a success.

Bob Daily/School North Island Meet in Port Alberni - May 2-3
(Results)

vancouver track and field image

Wasn't at the Saturday events for the meet, but heard good feedback.

From my knowledge, there were many PB's in Port Alberni. Josie came second in the 3000, and took off 55 seconds. Maureen won her 800 and 400 events and had a PB in her 400 with a time of 60.93, Ryan did well in his 800 and had PB in his 400 with time of 57.41. He took off 2 seconds, and had much left over.  Ryan is a very talented runner who isn't near his potential yet. Brendan Hoff took off some time in his 1500 so this is good. From what I saw he is getting stronger. Emily won her 1500 with a good time. She said afterwards, I could of kept on going at that pace for another 1500m. So a 4:45 1500  and 10 minute 3000 isn't out of her reach I think.. Seever Rondquist had a fantastic throw in shot put (9.24m), and first place finish.

Also, Carrigan in had a PB in the 400m. She went from a 1:14.90 down from 1:16:24. Megan got 3 pb's this weekend - 1500 m 5:57 (previously 6:00), 800 m 2:57 (previously 2.58), and 400 m 1.19 (previously 1.20).

Looking throw the results list there were many athletes on our club participating in many events and collecting ribbons, and that is fantastic. From what I see, we have some fine young talent in the running and field events. Just remember, conditioning will help all events.so keep up the running.  If  I missed anymore PB's please email me and I will put them in here.

IF anyone has photos can you give me some.

Gallery to come when I get more photos. Was an excellent meet. Out of the two days we had 20 kids participate. Watching the excitement in the new athletes was great to see. Next year we are hoping they have a new track. Thank you for everyone that helped at the triple jump pit. Thank you John Akehurst for officiating at the pit all day. You were a life saver. I wasn't worried about this for the newer parents because I remember when I was new - it was just nice to soak it all in the first meet. There will be an email out soon about our responsibility at the triple jump pit. Meets like these can't be run without parent and club help.

Trenholm provisionals, Harris destroys UAA record, April 17th

From UAA: WALNUT & AZUSA, Calif. - Alaska Anchorage’s freshman Stephanie Trenholm qualified provisionally for the Div. II NCAA Championships in the 800 meter race at the Mt. SAC Relays on Friday. Multiple Seawolf personal and season-bests were recorded across town at the Azusa Pacific Invite, including a new UAA record in the javelin by newcomer Elisha Harris.

Trenholm became just the second woman Seawolf to provisionally qualify for the National meet this season and improved her UAA school record with a time of two minutes, 2:13.89 seconds. The Campbell River, B.C. native bypassed the required time of 2:15.00. She joins teammate junior Elizabeth Chepkosgei with a provisional mark.

From the Comets: Steph is learning the challenges of racing in a competitive field race after race, meet after meet. Lessons she can take into her next race and next year.  She commented on why does he put me in these tough races. I commented that it is good to fall, and be beat up. It is how you bounce back that is the important part, and I feel from talking to her she is passing this test with flying colors. This will strengthen your character, give you experience, and toughness for races to come down the road.

Here is her race:

SFU Meet - 04/04/09

vancouver island track and field image

04/04/09 - They did well running against university students. I was really pleased with the effort and results this meet. Maureen placed third in her 800m race with a strong first 600m, but fell short in the end with a major lactic build up the last 200m. Something that will get better with each practice and race. Emily did well despite having a fever in her 1500m. She felt week the whole race. Alison competed in the 100m and 200m race. She false started in the 100m, which cause her to have a slow start, which affected her time. Her 200 start was much better. Alison will be gradually moving up to the 400 and then the 800. I look forward to seeing her progress this year and next.

Maureen, Alison and Emily from the Comets will be competing at the Simon Fraser University open meet Saturday, April 4th against some good competition. I look forward in seeing them race. We will be heading over Saturday morning.

Willamette Invitational - 04/03-4/09

April 03-4/09 - Stephanie took off 3 seconds in her 1500m race on Friday, and was very fatigued for the 800 the next day. She placed 5th in the 800 with a mid 2:15 time and in the 4:43 in the 1500. She was unable to run the 4 x 400 due to really sore shins. I am hoping they will not pose too much of a problem with her training the next 3 weeks.

Stephanie has a chance to better her times at the Willamette Invitational in Oregon only a week after the Stanford Invitational. She will be competing in the 1500, 800 and the 4 x 400. She has already qualified for the GNAC Championships that are being held May 1st weekend. Her next goal is to qualify provisionally for the NCAA Division II Championships. This means she could go to the Nationals in Texas with a provisional time of 2:15 in the 800 and 4:38 in the 1500 . I am confident she will reach these times next weekend. Especially in the 800.

Her main goal is to automatically qualify for the NCAA Division II Championships that are being held in Texas. She needs to get under 2:10.40 in the 800 and 4:30 in the 1500 race . She has four more meets to reach these times. Stephanie is learning much as a runner now that she is racing in tight races against very good runners. She will only get better.

Stephanie has to stay (is stuck) in Oregon this week due to the fact the ash from a Volcano near by is blowing over Alaska. This means no plains can fly in or out at the moment. So she will be in hotels another 7 days.

Seawolves back in action at Stanford Invitational

March 27-28/09 - Stephanie Trenholm will be competing in the 800 in San Francisco on Friday the 27th, and Stanford University on the 28th. "After two weeks off, the Alaska Anchorage track and field team returns to action at the Stanford Invitational on March 27-28. The events will run all day on both Saturday and Sunday at the Cobb Track and Angel Field at Stanford University."

Results: Steph did well in the 400m on Friday with a 2 place finish. She said she felt fresh at the end with her 60.44 time. In the 800 on Saturday she took off another second with a time of 2:15.16. With another 2-3 races under belt she will start to come into her own I feel. She also ran the 4x400 3 hours later with a strong 59 second first lap to help her team time of 4:05.02.

Here is the 800 race from Saturday at Standford University - she is in the second lane at the start in green and white.

Northridge Invitational - California
Cal State Northridge

Steph in the middle with two of her teammates

3/14/2009 - Stephanie had a good race in sunny California, bettering her time from a week before..."the Seawolves top-finish was recorded by freshman Stephanie Trenholm in the 800m. Trenholm posted a 6th place performance in a time of 2:16.08 for her career-best."   This was out of  40 runners. I know Stephanie's times will start to come down now that she has had a few races under her belt.

Talking to her today, the 15th, she said she is really tired - "I have been running 2 weeks straight," she said. Being in hotels for 10 days, I would think she is looking forward to getting back to her home in Alaska and resting up for her next meet that will be on March 27th-28th for the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, CA.

.She is heading back to Alaska from Las Vegas at 4pm today.

Occidental Distance Carnival
ODC

3/13/2009 - Stephanie had good race at her first Occidental Meet in California with a 2 place showing out of 52 runners in her 1500m race. Tomorrow she will be at Cal State Northridge to compete in the 800m and 4x400. She said the weather was beautiful.

THIS WEEK: 3/13 -14/2009

The Alaska Anchorage track and field team will head to sunny California for two invitational's on March 13-14. On Friday, the distance squad will compete in the Occidental Distance Carnival - Stephanie will race in the 1500 - in Eagle Rock where there are over 500 athletes competing before joining the rest of the Seawolves for the Northridge Invitational on Saturday where Stephanie will compete in the 800 with over 1400 athletes competing along with her 34 other teammates.

UNLV Classic in Las Vegas

vancouver island track and field image

March 7/09 - As the Seawolves' writer said it - "Rookie Stephanie Trenholm started her collegiate career with a second-place showing in the 800m with a time of 2:17.39." She was a step away catching the first place girl at the finish line. She said after, if I ran a smarter race, I could of beat that girl. I reassured her that this was her first race and she will be more prepared next time. This is Stephanie's first year at the University of Alaska in Anchorage, and first track meet of the year. I was there and was pleased with her effort and time in both races. It was a slower day for all the racers. She had a good race in the 4 x 400 also.

First Practice

March 3/09 - I was really impressed with the turn out today, March 3rd. I have a good feeling this is going to be a very successful year both developmental, and on the podium. It was really good seeing old and new faces again. D.T.

Kamloops Indoor Championships

Feb. 22/09 - Maureen McCulligh and Emily Charlesworth get their first meet out of the way at the Kamloops Indoor Championships. The first meet is always the most challenging due to you are not sure just how you will feel and do. They had a good first meet I feel with Maureen placing third in the 800m run, and Emily with a strong race and first place finish in the 3000m race.  Next race for them will be at the SFU Open meet.
